Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man wanted for questioning in connection with an apparent shooting last year that injured a Puna man.

On Oct. 22, a 36-year-old Keaau man sustained a head wound when an occupant of a teal sedan reportedly shot at him while the victim was driving on Route 130 in the area of the Ainaloa subdivision. Following the incident, the sedan and its several male occupants left the scene.

Fire Department personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated for his injury and released.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section have identified a person of interest as 22-year-old Misinale Kalavi Jr. of the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna. He is described as 6-foot-1, 280 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He is known to frequent the Puna and Kona areas.

Police warn members of the public not approach him but instead to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Robert Almeida by phone at 961-2386 or by email at ralmeida@co.hawaii.hi.us.
